Axis: Sova have crystallized on every level with their latest album, Blinded By Oblivion (God?/Drag City). The group, Brett Sova (gtr/vox), Jeremy Freeze (bass/vox), and Josh Johannpeter (drums/vox), wrote their new album within the foreboding confines of their hometown, Chicago, then flew out to placid Southern California to record it at Harmonizer Studios with Ty Segall producing. The resulting clash of industrial steel vs. indelible nature is sonically palpable, all produced for rock n' roll radio. Hinging on tension and cathartic release, neon-fried guitars and dual drums/drum machines push a motorik sonic narrative that delivers glammy psych, mutant punk, and art-damaged power pop in sequence. Mit sperriger Krautigkeit pumpen Axis:Sova ihr erstes Album seit fünf Jahren in den Garage-Rock-Äther. Beim fünften Album denkt niemand mehr an die Anfänge vo Axis:Sova als Soloprojekt von Frontmann Brett Sova. Eher sticht der markante Garage-Rock-Einschlag ins Auge, den die Band anstelle des intensiv blubbernden Glam Rocks des 2018er Vorgängers „Shampoo You“ platziert und geschmackvoll mit ihrem krautigen, psychedelischen Grundsound verbindet. Einerseits bedeutet das in Songs wie dem zweiminütigen „Hardcore Maps“, dass dicke Fuzz-Schichten auf simple Pentatonik-Riffs treffen, wie sie die White Stripes oder die Hives in den 2000ern hingelegt haben, andererseits aber auch entrücktes Gniedeln, das sich mit dem primitiv krachenden Schrammeln beißt und so eine spannende Dynamik herstellt. Gegensätze finden sich ebenfalls auf höheren Ebenen, etwa wenn man den Opener „People“ betrachtet: Der startet mit einem entschleunigten Drumcomputer-Beat, auf dem sich nach und nach wabernde Gitarrenmelodien und schließlich Orgelteppiche ausbreiten. Axis:Sova begrüßen einen gemächlich und meditativ zu „Blinded By Oblivion“, bevor es anfängt, motorisch zu dröhnen. Darüber hinaus finden Axis:Sova zwischen angenehmer Psychedelik im Midtempo, pumpender Kraut-Penetranz und sympathisch schäbigem Punk-Gerumpel eine komfortable Nische, die zwar die Welt nicht ändern wird – aber für den Moment einen Nerv trifft.
